Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot?
No for stories, posts, reels, profiles and regular DMs. Yes for disappearing photos and vanish mode chats. What Instagram notifies, with its Help Centre pages.

No, except for disappearing content in direct messages. You can screenshot stories, posts, reels, profiles, highlights and regular DMs with no notification to the other person. Instagram notifies only for disappearing photos and videos and for chats in Vanish mode — and on current app versions it may block the capture instead.
This guide lists every surface, quotes what Instagram's own Help Centre pages state, and shows where detection has limits. If you only want the rule per surface, the table below gives it.
When does Instagram notify a screenshot?
When Instagram sends a screenshot or recording notification.
| Content | Screenshot | Screen recording |
|---|---|---|
| Story (including Close Friends) | No | No |
| Post or reel | No | No |
| Profile, highlight or comment thread | No | No |
| Regular DM (text, permanent photo, shared post) | No | No |
| Broadcast channel message | No | No |
| Disappearing photo or video (View once, View twice) | Yes — the sender is notified, or the capture is blocked on current versions | Yes |
| Vanish mode chat | Yes — the sender is notified | Yes |
The principle is simple. Content that stays on Instagram is silent to capture. Content that is meant to disappear is protected: Instagram either tells the sender or stops the capture. The rest of this guide proves each row, starting with the silent ones.
Stories, posts, reels and profiles
No Help Centre page describes a screenshot notification for stories, posts, reels, profiles, highlights, comments or broadcast channels. Screenshot handling appears only on the pages about disappearing and vanish-mode messages. Three 2026 guides that tested each surface agree that none of the permanent surfaces notifies (Outfy (2026). Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot? Stories, Posts & DMs (2026 Guide). SOCi (2026). Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot a Post?.).
Two distinctions matter here. A story poster sees who viewed the story, but views and screenshots are different events: the viewer list never shows who captured the screen. Close Friends stories follow the same rule as public ones. Guides also report that Instagram briefly tested story screenshot alerts in 2018 and removed the test (SellerPic (2026). Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot? An Ultimate 2026 Guide.). No Help Centre page documents such a feature, so treat that history as background, not as a setting you must check.
Profile visits work the same silent way: opening a profile, photo or reel sends nothing, as profile views work differently from stories, where at least the view is visible.
DMs: which chats notify
Direct messages split into two kinds, and only one notifies.
Regular chats are silent. Text messages, permanent photos that stay in the thread, and posts shared into the chat from feed never trigger a screenshot notice. Instagram lists disappearing photos and videos as a separate message type next to these permanent ones (Instagram Help Centre (2026). Types of messages that you can send in chats on Instagram.), which is why the rules differ.
Disappearing photos and videos notify. When you send one, you choose View once, View twice (shown as Allow replay in some guides), or Unlimited views, which keeps a preview in the thread. Instagram states that you cannot view the photo after sending it, "but you can see if they were seen or if we detect that someone took a screenshot" (Instagram Help Centre (2026). Send disappearing photos or videos in chats on Instagram.). Choose Unlimited views and the preview stays in the chat like a permanent photo; choose View once or View twice and a capture alerts the sender.
Vanish mode is the second case. You enter it by swiping up in a chat; everything sent there disappears when someone leaves or turns the mode off. Instagram blocks copying, saving and forwarding there, and it warns: "Take a screenshot or screen recording of a message in vanish mode before it disappears. You'll receive a notification if we detect that they take a screenshot." (Instagram Help Centre (2026). Send messages in vanish mode on Instagram.) Note the words "if we detect": Instagram does not promise perfect detection, and it adds that someone can always photograph the screen with another camera.
One conflict deserves honesty. A second Help Centre page about sent disappearing content now says: "Taking a screenshot is now disabled for a disappearing photo or video that you've sent in a chat." (Instagram Help Centre (2026). See the status of a disappearing photo or video that you've sent on Instagram.) The send page describes detect-and-notify; the status page describes blocking. The behavior seems to depend on the app version, so treat disappearing content as never safe to capture unnoticed either way.
What the other person sees
For disappearing content, the sender sees a mark that the capture happened: a notice in a Vanish mode chat, or a status on the sent photo. For everything else — stories, posts, profiles, regular DMs — the other person sees nothing at all: no push, no in-chat line, no mark on the content.
Nobody can pull a list of who screenshotted their story or posts. Instagram offers no such list, and no setting reveals it. Apps that promise to show "who screenshotted you" cannot have that data, since Instagram shares nothing of the kind with third parties; see what tracker apps cannot show before you grant one your login. The reverse is silent too: how to check last seen shows what you can read about others without alerting them.
Screen recordings
Screen recording follows the screenshot rule on every surface. Recording a story, post, reel, profile or regular DM notifies nobody. Recording a disappearing photo or a Vanish mode chat triggers the same notice a screenshot would, with the same "if we detect" limit. Treat recordings exactly like screenshots when you decide what is safe to capture.
FAQ
Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story?
No. Instagram sends no notification for story screenshots, including Close Friends stories. The poster sees who viewed the story, never who captured it.
Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a DM?
It depends on the chat. Regular DMs never notify, but disappearing photos and Vanish mode chats do: the sender sees a screenshot notice, or current app versions block the capture.
Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a profile?
No. Profiles, highlights, posts, reels and comments can be screenshotted with no notification, and there is no visitor list that would reveal the capture later.
Does Instagram notify when you screen record?
The rule matches screenshots. Regular content records silently, while disappearing photos and Vanish mode chats trigger the same notice a screenshot would.
Can I see who screenshotted my story?
No. Instagram shows who viewed your story but never who screenshotted it, and third-party apps that claim otherwise cannot have that data.
