How to appear offline on Instagram

Turn off Show activity status to appear offline on Instagram. Steps for the app and the web, what changes for you, and what still shows.

By instagram Last Seen5 min read

To appear offline on Instagram, turn off Show activity status. Once it is off, nobody sees your green dot or your last seen time. The trade-off is symmetric: you cannot see anyone else's status either.

This guide gives the exact steps for the app and for a computer, explains what changes for you, and settles what the switch cannot do. If you want the reverse, turning the line back on, read how to turn on activity status.

How do you appear offline in the Instagram app?

The steps are the same on iPhone and Android, from Instagram's own help page:

  1. Tap your profile picture at the bottom right to open your profile.
  2. Tap Menu (the three lines) at the top right.
  3. Below How others can interact with you, tap Messages and story replies.
  4. Tap Show activity status.
  5. Turn the toggle next to Show activity status off.

Your green dot and your timestamps leave other people's inboxes. Instagram's activity status page says the switch controls the dot or timestamp next to your profile picture in messaging, so both go away at once. The line only ever appears there: in the inbox and at the top of an open chat, never on a profile or in a feed, as wikiHow's status guide shows.

How do you appear offline on a computer?

Instagram's web settings hold the same switch:

  1. Click More (the three lines) at the bottom left, then click Settings.
  2. Below How others can interact with you, click Messages and story replies.
  3. Click Show activity status.
  4. Turn the toggle next to Show activity status off.

This is one switch on your account, not one per device. Set it once and it applies everywhere you sign in. Instagram also lets you flip it back at any time, so appearing offline is never permanent.

What changes when you turn it off?

Three things change, and all three follow from the same setting:

  • Nobody sees when you are active. Your contacts see no green dot and no time such as Active 25m ago under your name.
  • You stop seeing everyone else. Instagram hides their dots and times from you too, so every chat line looks blank.
  • Everything else keeps working. Your chats stay where they are, and people can still message you. Only the presence line is gone.

What the switch changes for each side.

Before (switch on)After (switch off)
Others see about youGreen dot or last seen timeNothing
You see about othersGreen dot or last seen timeNothing
MessagesWork as usualWork as usual

If you turned your status off and every line looks empty, that is the switch doing its job, not a fault. Our troubleshooting guide, why Instagram activity status is not showing, lists the same check first: your own setting decides what you can see.

What can't appearing offline hide?

The switch hides one line, not your whole activity. Two things stay visible:

  • Typing and seen receipts still show. When you type in a chat, the other person still sees the typing indicator, and they can still see that you saw their message, as wikiHow's offline guide notes. Activity status and read receipts are separate settings. For the typing side, see whether people can see you typing.
  • One person cannot be singled out. The switch is all or nothing: there is no per-person off. If you want exactly one person to stop seeing your status while everyone else keeps seeing it, use Restrict instead. Our guide, can you hide your active status from just one person, compares the tools and gives the steps.

No setting brings a hidden status back from the outside, either. If your own switch is on and one person's line is gone while others still show, the cause sits on their side, as whether you can see a turned-off status explains.

What does this mean if you use iLS?

iLS reads the same line you see in your inbox: the dot or the timestamp Instagram shows on a conversation. So the switch cuts both ways for tracking too. If you turn your own status off, your own reads go blind along with your inbox, because Instagram shows your account nothing to record. And if the person you follow turns theirs off, their row shows no presence, which is absence of signal rather than proof they are offline. How to turn on activity status covers the both-sides-on requirement, and fixing common tracking problems explains the No signal reading.

Reading Instagram this way breaks its terms, and your account can be restricted, so weigh that before you connect an account.

FAQ

Do you disappear the moment you turn the switch off?

Instagram gives no time for the changeover, so expect a short delay rather than the same second. If someone still sees you a while later, check that the toggle stayed off and that your app is up to date, then ask them what they see after relaunching their app.

Can you appear offline to only one person?

Not with this switch: it hides you from everyone at once. To hide from one person while staying visible to the rest, restrict that person instead, as our per-person guide explains.

Does appearing offline hide your typing or your seen receipts?

No. The other side still sees the typing indicator while you type, and still sees that you saw their message. Only the online line and the last seen time go away.

Will people still be able to message you while you appear offline?

Yes. Messages arrive and send as usual. The only difference is that neither side sees a green dot or a time on the conversation.
