Does Instagram notify when someone comes online?
No, Instagram has no online alert. What it does notify for, and how to get an alert when a contact comes online.

No. Instagram has no built-in alert for when someone comes online. If you want to know the moment one specific person becomes active, you have to keep opening the chat thread and look, or use a tool that watches that thread for you.
This guide is for anyone who keeps checking a thread by hand and wonders whether Instagram can do the watching instead. It covers what Instagram does notify for, what it shows instead of an online alert, why no tracker can see past your own inbox, and how to get an online alert with its true limits.
Does Instagram tell you when someone comes online?
No. As of 2026, Instagram's notification settings have no online-presence alert. Instagram's push-notifications page lists what you can choose to be notified about, and an online alert is not on the list.
What the page does list is content from accounts you follow. You can choose to get notified every time an account you follow shares posts, stories or reels, or goes live. The same settings cover interactions and posts. None of these tells you that a person opened the app.
That is why turning on every notification for a person still leaves you without an online alert. Post notifications tell you when they share something. Interaction notifications tell you about activity around you. Neither tells you when they come online and say nothing.
What Instagram shows instead of an alert
Instagram shows presence in one place only: Direct messaging. Instagram's activity page says you can see when an account you follow and anyone you message was last active or is currently active, when both sides have activity status on.
In your conversation list you see a green dot or a time next to the picture of people you follow or have direct conversations with. When you open the chat you can see more, such as In the chat or In the camera. For what each label means, read what Active now and the times mean.
What the inbox line tells you.
| Signal | Where you see it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Green dot with Active now | Next to the picture, and under the name in an open chat | Instagram counts the account as active now |
| Time such as Active 25m ago | In the conversation list, next to the picture | Roughly when the account was last active |
| Active yesterday | In the conversation list | The account was active the day before, with no time |
| No line | — | Instagram shows nothing, which is not the same as offline |
Two gates decide whether you see any line at all. You need a link between the accounts, in practice a DM thread, and both sides must keep activity status on. Instagram's activity-status page says that when you turn your own status off, you stop seeing everyone else's lines too. The switch lives under Show Activity Status. For the full walkthrough, see how to check last seen in DMs.
Why a tracker cannot show more than your inbox can
This limit decides what any alert tool can do. A tracker reads the same inbox line your own account can already see. When that line is empty, the tool sees an empty line too.
The line is empty in two common cases. You never exchanged a conversation with the person, so there is no row to read. Or either side turned activity status off, so Instagram shows nothing to either side. No setting on your side brings the line back when the other side turned it off.
That limit is also your safety check. Instagram shows last seen inside your own logged-in inbox, so a site that asks for your Instagram password or a login code to reveal hidden status is asking for the keys to your account. Give your password or a code to no checker page: no honest reading needs it, and a leaked code can lock you out. Searches for an online notifier mostly return tracker listings and short videos that skip this limit, as how to check last seen in DMs explains in more detail.
How to get an alert when a contact comes online
Since Instagram itself sends no online alert, an alert has to be built on top of the inbox line. A logged-in session reads the line on a schedule and notifies you when a check finds the contact online after a check that did not. That is what iLS alerts do.
iLS sends a browser notification for each tracked contact when a reading flips from offline to online. You choose which contacts may alert you with Mute and Unmute on each Tracker card, and you can test the path with Send a test before you rely on it. The full walkthrough lives in how to turn iLS alerts on.
Four true limits apply, wherever you get the alert from:
- It only works with an existing DM thread, and with activity status on for both people. Without both, there is no line to watch.
- Reading the thread can mark that person's messages to you as read.
- Automating your own Instagram account breaks Instagram's terms and can get your account restricted. Read how to lower the risk to your account before you connect.
- Alerts are browser notifications. They arrive in desktop browsers and on Android, and on iPhone through the Home Screen app.
What it cannot tell you
Every presence reading has the same honest limit. It tells you what Instagram displayed at one check, never what the person did.
A reading cannot tell you what they did or who they talked to. iLS reads one line, the activity status Instagram shows. It never reads message content, followers or stories. It cannot tell you whether they read your message: activity status and read notes are separate things.
A reading is also not exact to the minute. Checks run on a schedule, so a short visit between two checks can leave no alert at all. Treat a time such as Active 25m ago as roughly by design, and a single reading as a rough picture of hours, never proof of anything. When no alert arrives even though you expected one, the cause is usually simple: the contact is muted or paused, your session expired, or the line was empty at check time.
FAQ
Can Instagram notify you when someone comes online?
No. Instagram has no notification for when someone comes online. Its settings cover posts, stories, reels and live videos from accounts you follow, plus other interactions. To know when a contact comes online without checking by hand, you need a tool that watches the DM-thread activity line and alerts on an offline to online change.
Can I get notified without messaging them first?
No. Both Instagram and any honest tracker need an existing DM thread with the person, plus activity status on for both sides. Without a shared thread there is no activity row to read, and when either side turns the setting off Instagram shows nothing to either side.
Why did I get no alert even though they were online?
The usual causes are a muted or paused contact, an expired Instagram session, or an empty activity line at check time. A short visit between two scheduled checks can also leave no alert. Check the contact's Mute state, reconnect when the Tracker asks for it, and confirm that both sides still have activity status on.
Does turning on post notifications tell me when they are online?
No. Post, story, reel and live notifications tell you when an account you follow shares something or goes live. They say nothing about when the person opens the app or reads messages. Only the DM-thread activity line reflects presence, and only under the two gates above.
