Why can't I see someone's last seen on Instagram?
Almost always because activity status is off on one side. Instagram shows it only when you have both switched it on, and only for someone you already have a conversation with.
What does "Active now" mean on Instagram?
That Instagram saw them open the app moments ago. Anything older shows as a relative time instead, like "Active 25m ago", and it stops showing once they have been away a while.
Do I need their password, or just my own account?
Just your own, and only once. iLS signs in as you and reads exactly what your account can already see. It never asks for the other person's login and never touches their account.
Does it work if their account is private?
Yes. Public or private makes no difference, because iLS reads your own inbox rather than their profile. What it does need is a conversation the two of you already share.
Can iLS tell me if they opened my message?
No. iLS reads one line — the activity status Instagram puts on a conversation. It can tell you when someone was on Instagram, never what they did while they were there.
Can iLS tell me the moment someone comes online?
Yes. iLS watches for the moment they come online and tells you when it happens. Every check still lands on the timeline too, so their hours build up alongside it.
Will they know I'm checking?
Instagram notifies nobody that their activity status was read. One caveat: iLS reads by opening your existing conversation, so anything they sent you stops showing as unread.
Can this get my Instagram account banned?
It's a real risk. Instagram doesn't permit reading it this way, so an account can be restricted. iLS works from a single signed-in session and spaces its checks out.
Is any of this legal?
iLS only shows what your own Instagram account can already see, so nothing hidden is being unlocked. Rules on monitoring another person vary by country, and that part is yours to check.
Tracking only works for someone you already share a DM thread with, and only while both of you have Instagram's activity status turned on. Reading Instagram this way breaks its terms of service — a trade-off worth weighing before you sign in.
