Acceptable Use Policy

iLS tells you when someone you already talk to on Instagram is online. That is information about another person who hasn't agreed to it being collected. This policy sets out when you may use iLS for that, when you may not, and what anyone — including a person who has been added — can do if iLS is misused.

It is part of the Terms of Service. Breaking it is a serious breach of those terms.

The short version

• Only use iLS where you have a lawful reason to know when someone is online.
• Never use it to control, pressure, intimidate, harass or stalk anyone.
• Stop straight away if someone asks you to, blocks you or cuts contact with you.
• If you think iLS is being used against you, write to [email protected]. We'll look into it and, where the report checks out, stop it.

What you confirm each time you add someone

By adding a contact, you confirm that:

1. Your use is lawful where you live and where they live, including data protection and criminal law.
2. You have a genuine existing connection with them — the DM conversation iLS reads is one you're really part of.
3. They haven't shut the door on you. They haven't blocked you, asked you to stop contacting them, or told you they don't want to be watched, and no court or authority has ordered you to stay away from them or stop contacting them.
4. If they're under 18, they're your own child or a child you hold legal parental responsibility for.

If any of these stops being true, remove that contact straight away.

What you must never do

You may not use iLS to:

• Control, pressure, intimidate, harass or stalk anyone — whoever they are to you, including a current or former partner or spouse.
• Stalk someone persistently — following their online hours in a way that causes them serious unease or fear for their safety. In Türkiye this can be the crime of persistent stalking (ısrarlı takip, Turkish Criminal Code Article 123/A).
• Breach a protective order — monitor anyone who has a protective or preventive order against you, including under Türkiye's Law No. 6284 on the protection of the family and prevention of violence against women.
• Monitor someone who has shut the door on you — anyone who has asked you to stop contacting or watching them, has blocked or restricted you, or has cut contact with you.
• Monitor a child who isn't yours — anyone under 18 who isn't your own child or a child in your legal care.
• Monitor employees, job applicants or anyone you have power over at work.
• Monitor people for someone else — as an investigator, agency or service, or by reselling or sharing access to iLS.
• Use a timeline to threaten, blackmail, shame or expose someone, or publish or share their readings with others. Recording or disclosing someone's private life can be a crime in Türkiye (Turkish Criminal Code Articles 134 and 136) and elsewhere.
• Use an Instagram account that isn't yours, or get around iLS's limits — for example with several iLS accounts to go past 10 contacts.
• Attack or misuse iLS itself — probing its security, scraping it, reverse-engineering it, or overloading it.

What happens if you break this policy

Depending on how serious it is, we may:

• stop tracking the contact concerned and delete its readings;
• suspend or close your account, without a refund for the current period unless the law requires one;
• keep the records needed to deal with the matter;
• share information with police, prosecutors or courts when the law requires it or they lawfully order it.

We don't need to warn you first where someone's safety may be at risk.

Reporting misuse

Anyone can report misuse — you don't need an iLS account.

Write to [email protected] with the subject "Abuse report" and tell us:

• the Instagram username you think is being read, or the iLS user you're concerned about;
• what makes you think iLS is being misused;
• how we can reach you.

We treat every report seriously and handle it confidentially. We act as quickly as we can and within 30 days at the latest; reports involving someone's safety come first.

If you think someone is using iLS to see when you're online

You can ask us to check whether your Instagram username is being read through iLS, to stop it, and to delete the readings kept about you.

• Proving it's your account. So that nobody can make this request about someone else, we may ask you to show you control the Instagram account — for example by adding a short code we send you to your bio for a few minutes.
• What we do. If your username is being read, we stop it and delete the readings, and we deal with the account involved under this policy.
• What we don't do. We don't tell you who the user is unless the law requires us to or a court or prosecutor orders it.

You can also protect yourself directly on Instagram: turning off your activity status, or blocking the person, stops iLS — and anyone else — from reading it.
