What does Active now mean on Instagram, and how accurate is it?
The green dot, Active 25m ago and In sleep mode: what each label means, who can see it, and why Instagram's activity status is only a rough signal.

On Instagram, "Active now" means that Instagram counts the account as active on Instagram at this moment. You see it as a green dot next to their profile picture in your messages, and as the words Active now when you open your chat with them. A line such as Active 25m ago or Active yesterday tells you roughly when the account was last active.
None of these labels shows what the person does on Instagram or who they talk to. This guide explains each label, who can see it and how far you can trust it. If you never see anyone's status, start with how to turn on activity status and check the other person's.
What do the green dot, "Active 25m ago" and "In sleep mode" mean?
Instagram shows activity status in messaging. According to Instagram's page on who's active, it appears next to the profile picture of people you follow or message. You see it in your inbox and inside an open chat. These are the labels you can see:
Instagram's activity status labels and what each one tells you.
| Label | Where you see it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Green dot, Active now | Next to the profile picture, and under the name in an open chat | Instagram counts the account as active now |
| Active 25m ago (or another time) | In your inbox, next to the profile picture | About when the account was last active |
| Active yesterday | In your inbox | The account was active yesterday, with no time given |
| In the chat, In the camera | Inside your open chat with them | What they do in that chat at this moment |
| A moon, In sleep mode | In place of the green dot | They turned on sleep mode, and they can still use Instagram |
| No label | — | Instagram shows nothing, which is not the same as offline |
People often misread the moon. Instagram's sleep mode page says that people in sleep mode can still use Instagram and send messages. So the moon tells you that sleep mode is on, not that the person is asleep.
Who can see your activity status?
Two things decide it: a link between the two accounts, and the setting on both sides. Instagram's help pages say that you see the status of accounts you follow and of anyone you message, when you both have activity status on.
- The link is a follow or a DM conversation. Instagram words the follow rule in two ways. The activity status page mentions both "people you follow" and "accounts who follow you", and the 2018 launch post said "friends who follow you". A DM conversation is in every version, so it is the dependable link.
- The setting must be on for both of you. If you turn your own status off, you can't see anyone else's status either.
- Show activity status is one switch. It shows your status to everyone linked to you, or to nobody. To hide it from one person, use Restrict (see the FAQ).
How accurate is Instagram's activity status?
It is a rough signal, not a precise clock. Instagram's help pages don't say what counts as "active" or how often the labels update. Keep these limits in mind:
- It describes the account, not the person. One account can be logged in on more than one device, and Instagram's login activity page lists each device that logged in recently. Active now tells you that the account is active, not who holds the phone.
- The times are coarse. Active yesterday covers a full day and gives no hour. Instagram doesn't say how it rounds a time such as Active 25m ago.
- Timings that you read on other sites don't come from Instagram. Some sites say that Active now stays for one to five minutes, or that a label disappears after 48 hours. Instagram's help pages give no such numbers.
- No label doesn't mean offline. Instagram shows nothing when one of you has the setting off, when they restricted you, or when there is no follow or DM link. From your side, all of these look the same.
Why does Instagram show someone as active when they're not?
Instagram gives no reason, and it doesn't publish what it counts as activity. One possible cause is a device that is still logged in, because the status belongs to the account, not to one phone. You can't check someone else's account. If your own account shows as active when you don't use Instagram, check where it is logged in. Instagram's login activity page gives these steps:
- Tap your profile picture at the bottom right, then tap the menu at the top right.
- Tap Password and security, then tap Where you're logged in.
- Tap your account, then tap Select devices to log out.
- Select each device that you don't recognize, then tap Log out.
Instagram says that not everyone has this setting yet. If you can't find it, go to Security, then Login Activity. For a login that you don't recognize, tap This Wasn't Me and follow the steps to reset your password. If every device on the list is yours, you can't see from the outside what Instagram counted as activity.
Can you see when someone is usually active?
Not in Instagram. Your inbox shows only their most recent status, and Instagram's help pages describe no history of earlier ones. To see a pattern, you have to open the app many times and note each label yourself.
iLS was built to record that line for you. It opens your DM conversation with a contact from your own Instagram account, reads the same line that you would see, and saves each check. The iLS Report then puts those checks on a timeline. After a few days, you can see the hours when Instagram usually showed them as active. How to read the iLS report explains the dots and the gaps.
iLS can't read more than Instagram shows, so every limit above also applies to its readings. It needs an existing DM conversation with the person, and activity status on for both of you. Each reading opens the conversation, which can mark their messages to you as read. Using iLS also breaks Instagram's Terms of Use and can get your account restricted. What that risk is and how to lower it explains the details.
What can't Active now tell you?
- What they do or who they talk to. Active now says that the account is on Instagram. It doesn't separate messages from reels, and it doesn't show who they message.
- Whether they read your message. Active now describes the account, not a message that you sent.
- How long they stayed. The green dot shows one moment, not the length of a visit.
- Why a label disappeared. A switched-off setting and a restriction look the same from your side.
- Why they didn't reply. People open Instagram for many reasons. Only the person can tell you why your message has no answer.
FAQ
Can I hide my activity status from one person?
Yes, with Restrict. Instagram's Restrict page says that a restricted person can't see when you're online, and that your chat with them moves to Message Requests. Open your chat with them and tap their name at the top. Tap Options at the top right, then tap Restrict and confirm.
How long does Active now stay on Instagram?
Instagram doesn't say. Its help pages give no time limit for Active now. They also give no rule for when one label changes to the next.
Does sleep mode hide your activity status?
No. Sleep mode changes your label to In sleep mode and the green dot to a moon, so people still see that you're in sleep mode. To hide your status, open the menu on your profile. Tap Messages and story replies, then turn off Show activity status.
