How to check Instagram last seen and what it can really tell you
How to check Instagram last seen in DMs, what Active now and Active 25m ago mean, and what no app can show you when activity status is off.

Open your Direct inbox and look next to the person's picture. A green dot means Instagram counts them as active now, and a time such as Active 25m ago tells you roughly when they were last active. You see either one only when you both have activity status turned on and you already share a DM thread.
This guide shows where to look and why the line is sometimes missing. It also shows why no checker or tracker app can show you more than your own account can already see.
Where do you see last seen on Instagram?
Instagram shows presence in messaging in two places. In your conversation list, look next to the person's profile picture for a green dot or a time. When you open the chat, the top of the screen shows more detail about what they are doing right now.
What each activity line tells you.
| Line | Where you see it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Green dot with Active now | Next to the picture, and under the name in an open chat | Instagram counts the account as active now |
| Active 25m ago or another time | In the conversation list, next to the picture | Roughly when the account was last active |
| Active yesterday | In the conversation list | The account was active the day before, without an exact time |
| Seen or Typing... | Under your messages in the inbox | How the conversation stands: a seen note or someone typing a reply |
| In the chat or In the camera | At the top of an open chat | The person has this conversation or the camera open now |
The green dot answers "online now". The times answer "last active". Read the times as estimates, not clock times — Instagram labels them roughly by design.
Why can't you see someone's last seen?
In almost every case, one of two settings is the cause. Instagram shows the line only when you both have activity status turned on, and only for someone you follow or already message. When either side turns the setting off, Instagram shows nothing to either side.
Work through this list in order:
- Check your own setting first. When yours is off, you cannot see anyone else's status either.
- Confirm you share a DM thread with them. Without at least one exchanged conversation, there is no line to read.
- Consider their side. If they turned activity status off, nothing on your side brings it back.
To switch yours on, open Settings and go to Messages and story replies, then open Show Activity Status and switch the toggle on. The full walkthrough for your device is in how to turn on activity status (both sides need it). When the setting looks right on both sides and the line is still missing, work through when activity status still doesn't show before you assume anything about the person.
Can a last seen checker or tracker show you more?
No. A checker site, a tracker app, or an "online checker" free tool reads the same inbox line your own account can already see. When that line is empty because activity status is off on either side, or because you never messaged the person, the tool sees an empty line too. There is no view that reaches past the other person's setting.
That limit is also your safety check. Instagram shows last seen inside your own logged-in inbox, so a site that asks for your Instagram password or a login code to "reveal" hidden status is asking for the keys to your account. Instagram's own 6-digit login codes go to your phone or authentication app, never to a checker page. Give your password or a code to no checker site: no honest reading needs it, and a leaked code can lock you out of your own profile.
Searches for an instagram last seen checker or an instagram online tracker mostly return tracker-app listings and short videos that skip these limits. Use them, if you use them at all, with the rule above in mind: when a tool promises hidden status, offline histories for strangers, or exact minute-by-minute proof, it promises what Instagram does not give any reader.
How does iLS read it instead?
iLS reads the same line, on your behalf, on a schedule. You connect your own Instagram once and add someone you already message. iLS then opens your inbox as you and notes what it shows: Active now, a time, or nothing to show. The readings pile up into a timeline, and a browser alert can tell you when a contact comes back online. The setup for alerts is in how online alerts work in iLS.
Four limits apply, plainly stated. It needs the DM thread and the setting on both sides, like any reader. Reading opens the conversation, so the other person's messages to you can stop showing as unread. Using iLS reads Instagram in a way its terms forbid, and your Instagram account can face a restriction. Alerts are browser notifications, and they do not reach iPhone yet. A gap in the timeline means no reading happened there, not that the person was offline.
What it can't tell you
Last seen tells you when an account was around. It does not tell you what the person did there. It cannot tell you whether they opened your message, what any message said, or who else they talked to. It does not prove they ignored you: an Active now label beside a slow reply can mean the app runs in the background, or another chat has their attention. Treat the times as rough signals, and let the conversation answer what the label cannot.
FAQ
Can you see someone's last seen when they turned activity status off?
No. When either side turns activity status off, Instagram shows nothing to either side, and no checker or tracker can bring it back. The only fix is on their side of the setting.
Why do you see Active today with no time?
Instagram groups older activity into day labels instead of exact times. Active today means activity earlier in the day without a precise hour, so read it as "around today" rather than a clock time.
Does it matter when the account is private?
No. Public or private changes who can follow the account, not how presence reads. What matters is the DM thread and the setting on both sides, which work the same for private accounts you already message.
Does blocking hide last seen?
Yes, along with everything else. A person you blocked, or who blocked you, loses the thread the reading needs, so no line shows on either side while the block stands.
Can you hide your last seen from just one person?
Instagram's own switch is all or nothing, but one tool hides you from a single account. Which tools actually hide you from one person, and what each one costs you, is compared in can you hide your active status from just one person on Instagram.
