Can you see someone's activity status if they turned it off?
No. When someone turns activity status off, Instagram hides their green dot and last seen from everyone. Here's how to tell and what still works.

No. Instagram shows nothing for that person — no green dot and no time. No setting brings a hidden status back.
This guide is for the case when one person's line disappears while others still show. It explains what off looks like, why you cannot tell the cause from outside, and what you can still check.
What does off look like in your inbox?
When activity status is off on either side, Instagram shows no line at all. You see no green dot and no time such as Active 25m ago. The chat still works. Only the presence line is gone.
Instagram's page on who's active says you can see when someone was last active only when you both have Activity Status turned on. Instagram's Activity Status page says the status shows to people you follow and anyone you message. You can turn it on or off at any time.
Who sees whose status when the switch is off.
| Your switch | Their switch | You see them | They see you |
|---|---|---|---|
| On | On | Yes | Yes |
| On | Off | No | No |
| Off | On | No | No |
| Off | Off | No | No |
The second row surprises most people. Your own switch controls what you can see, not only what others see. If you turn yours off, you lose everyone else's lines too. To learn what each line means when it does show, see what each activity status label means.
Instagram shows the line only in messaging. You see it next to the profile picture in your inbox and at the top of an open chat. You do not see it on a profile, in a feed, or in Stories.
Can you tell if they turned it off or restricted you?
No. From outside, each cause looks the same: no line. Instagram does not tell you which one applies.
These causes all remove the line:
What removes the line, and what you can check.
| Cause | What happens | What you can check |
|---|---|---|
| They turned activity status off | Instagram hides their line from everyone | Nothing on their side; check your own switch first |
| You turned your status off | You hide their lines from yourself | Open Show Activity Status and turn it on |
| They restricted you | You cannot see when they are online | Instagram's Restrict page says a restricted person cannot see when you are online |
| No follow or chat link | Instagram shows status only for follows and chats | Confirm you follow them or share a chat |
| Long time away | Instagram can stop showing a line after a long pause | Wait for their next visit; a new visit can restore it |
| App or connection fault | A fault can hide lines for a while | See why activity status is not showing for one person |
Work through the causes in this order:
- Open your profile.
- Tap Menu.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Tap Messages and story replies.
- Tap Show Activity Status.
- If the switch is off, turn it on.
- Check the same chat in your inbox.
- Confirm you share at least one chat with them.
If your switch is on and other contacts still show lines, the cause sits on their side or in the link between your accounts. You cannot separate "off" from "restricted" by looking. A restricted chat also moves to Message Requests, but Instagram sends no notice, so the inbox alone does not prove it.
Can a viewer site or tracker app show hidden status?
No. A site or app reads the same inbox line your account can already see. When Instagram shows nothing, there is nothing to read.
Videos that promise a hidden-status check usually do one of three things. They ask you to refresh your inbox, they show public profile details that do not include presence, or they ask for your login. None of these changes what Instagram shares. Treat a page that asks for your password with care. This article does not link to such tools, and you should not trust one with your account.
The same limit applies to iLS. iLS reads only the activity line Instagram shows to your own account, and it needs an existing chat plus activity status on for both sides. When Instagram shows nothing, iLS logs the check as No signal. No signal means no reading, not offline. A failed check means the read did not complete, also not offline.
One caveat applies wherever iLS reads. iLS opens your existing chat to read the line, and opening the chat can mark their messages as read.
What can you still check?
You cannot bring a hidden line back, but you can rule out your own side and keep the link healthy.
- Turn your own switch on with the steps above.
- Confirm you follow them or share a chat thread.
- Send a normal message only if you already talk there.
- Ask them if you have another way to reach them.
- If you both want visibility, follow how to turn on activity status on both sides.
Do not create new accounts to test them, and do not use a third-party login to probe them. Extra logins add risk to your own account without adding proof. If the line returns later, it means Instagram has a reading again. It does not tell you why it was gone.
Tracking only works for someone you already share a chat thread with, and only while both of you have activity status turned on. Reading this way breaks Instagram's terms of use.
FAQ
Can you see hidden activity status anyway with another setting?
No. Instagram offers no exception, list, or viewer role that reveals a switched-off status. The Show Activity Status switch is all-or-nothing, except that Restrict hides you from one person.
How do you know if someone turned off their activity status?
You cannot know for sure. If your switch is on and you see others but not them, off is likely. Still, restrict, no chat link, long absence, or a fault look the same. Rule out your own switch and chat link first.
Does restrict hide activity status differently from turning it off?
Yes, in scope. Turning off hides your line from everyone and hides theirs from you. Restrict hides your online state from that one person only, and it also hides whether you read their messages. Others still see you as before.
If I turn my status off, can I still see others?
No. When yours is off, you cannot see who is active. Turn it back on to restore both directions.
Can iLS show someone with activity status off?
No. iLS shows only what your own account can already see. When either side has activity status off, iLS logs No signal for that check. Once both sides turn it on and share a chat, new checks can show presence again.
