Can people see when you're typing on Instagram, and can you turn it off?
Yes, if you both have activity status on. Where Instagram shows Typing..., what In the chat means, and the per-chat switch to hide it that guides report.

Yes. When you write in a chat, the other person can see "Typing..." if you both have Activity Status turned on. Instagram's own help page lists "Typing..." as an activity status label, next to labels such as "Active 25m ago". Inside an open chat, Instagram can also show "In the chat" or "In the camera".
This guide separates what Instagram's Help Center says from what other guides report. It covers where the label shows, what the labels in a chat mean, how people turn typing off, and why you sometimes can't see someone type.
Where does Instagram show that you're typing?
Instagram's page on who's active gives two places where you see activity in messaging. The inbox shows each person's most recent activity status. An open chat shows more activity.
Activity labels that Instagram's help page gives as examples.
| Label | Where you see it | What Instagram's page calls it |
|---|---|---|
| "Typing..." | Your inbox, on the person's line | Their most recent activity status |
| "Active 25m ago", "Active yesterday" | Your inbox, on the person's line | Their most recent activity status |
| "In the chat", "In the camera" | Inside the chat, when you open it | Activity that you see in a chat |
The same page gives one rule for all of these labels. You see them only when you both have Activity Status turned on, for accounts you follow and for anyone you message. If your Activity Status is off, you can't see who's active.
In Instagram's help pages, typing is part of activity status, not a separate feature. The Activity Status page says that when your status is on, people you follow and anyone you message see when you were last active or currently active. The guide on how to turn activity status on shows where the switch is.
What do "In the chat" and "In the camera" mean?
Instagram gives these labels as examples, but it doesn't define them. Read as written, "In the chat" means that the person has your chat open now. "In the camera" means that they have the camera open from your chat.
The Activity Status page supports the first reading. It says that when you turn off your status, you don't see when people are "currently active in the same chat as you". So with your status off, you lose these labels, "Typing..." and the green dot together.
"In the chat" alone doesn't mean that a reply is on the way. It tells you that the chat is open. "Typing..." tells you that the person writes in the message box. For the green dot and "Active now", see what each activity status label means.
Can you turn off the typing indicator?
Instagram's Help Center has no page about a typing setting. We checked on 16 October 2026. But since 2024, creator videos have shown how to turn typing off. A guide from May 2026 and a creator video from February 2026 show a Typing indicator switch in the settings of each chat, with the same path. Older guides from 2023 and 2024, such as WP Reset's guide from November 2024, say that Instagram has no such setting. So your app may not show it.
If your app has the switch, do these steps:
- Open the chat with the person.
- Tap their name at the top of the chat.
- Tap Privacy & safety.
- Find Typing indicator and turn it off.
The May 2026 guide says that the switch works for one chat at a time. To hide your typing from more people, do the steps in each chat.
What about Activity Status? Instagram lists "Typing..." as an activity status in the inbox, so turning your status off should also remove that inbox label. But Instagram doesn't say if the typing dots inside an open chat follow the same rule, and guides disagree about it. So don't rely on Activity Status alone to hide your typing. Also remember the cost: with your status off, you can't see anyone else's status.
Why can't you see when someone is typing?
Start with the causes that Instagram's help pages support. Then check the app.
- Your Activity Status is off. With your status off, you can't see anyone's activity status. Check this first.
- Their Activity Status is off. Instagram shows activity status only when you both have it on. You can't see their setting.
- They turned off the typing switch for your chat. This comes from guides and videos, not from Instagram's help pages. You can't see it from your side.
- They don't write in your chat. The label shows only while the person writes to you.
- Your app or your connection. Guiding Tech's guide gives more fixes: close Instagram and open it again, update the app, and change between Wi-Fi and mobile data. It also suggests that you turn off Use less mobile data in Instagram's settings, and on iPhone, turn on Background App Refresh for Instagram.
If you can't see anyone's activity at all, the checks in why activity status can disappear also apply.
Can iLS see when someone is typing?
No. iLS (instagram Last Seen) reads one line: the activity status that Instagram shows on your chat with one person, such as "Active now" or "Active 25m ago". It doesn't read "Typing...", "In the chat" or "In the camera", and it never reads your messages.
iLS works only with a person you already have a chat with, and only when you both have Activity Status on. To read the status, iLS opens your chat with the person, so their messages to you can show as read. Using iLS also breaks Instagram's terms, and Instagram can restrict your account. What that risk is and how to lower it explains the details.
What can't the typing indicator tell you?
- What the person writes. The label shows that someone types, not the words.
- That a message will arrive. People start a message and then delete it.
- Why they stopped. Only the person knows why no message came.
- Which setting hides it. If you never see someone type, they may have the typing switch off or their status off. From your side, the two look the same.
FAQ
Does Instagram notify someone when you're typing?
Not according to Instagram's list. Instagram's page on push notifications gives these reasons for a notification: someone follows you, likes or comments on your post, mentions you in a comment, sends you a message or goes live. Typing isn't one of them.
If I start typing and then delete it, will they know?
They can see "Typing..." while you write, if they look at their inbox or your chat at that time. Instagram's help pages don't describe any record of typing after you stop. If you don't want the label to show at all, use the typing switch in that chat, if your app has it.
Is "Typing..." the same as Active now?
No, but both are activity status labels. "Active now" shows that the person is on Instagram. "Typing..." shows that they write in your chat. Instagram shows both only when you both have Activity Status on.
