Who can see your Instagram activity status?

Only people you follow or message can see when you are active, and only when both sides leave activity status on. What Restrict, Block and turning it off hide.

By instagram Last Seen8 min read

Only people you follow and anyone you message can see when you are active on Instagram. Both sides must leave activity status on. They see it in Direct messaging: a green dot or a time next to the picture, with more detail in the open chat. Strangers see nothing.

This guide names the exact audience, where the line shows, and what each control hides. It uses Instagram's own Help Centre pages, so you can check every rule. For what the labels mean, start with the Active now line and its times.

When does Instagram show your status?

Two things must both be true. Instagram's page on who is active says you can see when an account you follow and anyone you message was last active or is currently active when you both have activity status on. Its activity status page says the same from your side: when yours is on, people you follow and anyone you message see when you were last active or are currently active.

Where it shows matters. The status shows in messaging, not on your profile, posts or stories. In the conversation list you see a green dot or a time next to the picture of people you follow or have direct conversations with. Your inbox shows the most recent line, such as Active 25m ago or Active yesterday. When you open the chat you can see more, such as in the chat or in the camera.

Who sees your status, and who does not.

Sees itDoes not see it
People you follow, when both sides leave it onStrangers with no follow and no chat
Anyone you share a DM thread with, when both sides leave it onFollowers you never messaged and who do not follow you back, in practice: no conversation row shows a line
You see their line only while your own switch stays onAnyone when you turn your own switch off, and anyone whose own switch is off

A follow alone does not create a place to show the line. Without a conversation row, there is no dot or time to read. Treat the dependable rule as follow-or-DM plus both-on, read in the inbox.

What does turning it off hide?

Everything, in both directions. It is one switch for everyone. When you turn yours off, you hide your dot and times from all linked accounts, and you lose their dots and times too. Instagram's activity status page says that when you turn it off you will not see when accounts who follow you or direct conversations are active, were recently active or are currently in the same chat as you, and you will not see anyone else's status either.

On a computer the path is: click More at the bottom left, then click Settings. Below How others can interact with you, click Messages and story replies. Click Show activity status, then switch it off. The full walkthrough for phone and computer, with what to check when the menus move, is in how to turn activity status on or off.

There is no per-person switch here. To hide from one account while others still see you, use Restrict, not this toggle.

What do Restrict and Block hide?

Restrict is the per-person tool. Instagram's Restrict page says that if you restrict someone, they will not be able to see when you are online or if you have read their messages. Instagram's guide to its tools says the same in plainer words: the restricted person will not see when you are online. Your chat with them moves from the main inbox to Message Requests, their new comments stay hidden until you approve them, and you get no notifications for those comments.

Block works by removal, not by a status setting. Instagram's block page lists what changes: the blocked account cannot find your profile, see your content or send you messages, and Instagram does not tell them. The page does not mention activity status at all. With no reachable profile and no working thread, there is no inbox line left to read. If you only want to hide the status line, Restrict is the tool Instagram describes for it, with steps in how to hide your active status from one person.

The other single-person tools do not mention the status. Mute changes what you see from the person, not what they see from you: it hides their posts, stories or messages from your side. None of the opened Help pages say that Mute hides when you are online.

Why does someone show no status?

Work through the causes in order before you assume anything about the person. Most cases come from the rules above.

  1. Your own switch is off. Then every chat looks empty. Turn it on and check again.
  2. You share no DM thread and you do not follow each other in a way that shows a row. Confirm the thread exists.
  3. Their switch is off. Then their row stays empty whatever you do.
  4. They restricted you, or you restricted them. A restricted account cannot see when you are online.
  5. The account was quiet for a long time, or it was blocked, deactivated or deleted. An old time can sit there with no exact hour, or no line at all.

Steps 1 to 4 cover almost every case in Instagram's pages. When the setting looks right on both sides and the line is still missing for one person only, work through when activity status still does not show before you draw a conclusion.

What can iLS read here?

iLS reads the same inbox line your own account can already see. It signs in as you, opens the DM thread on a schedule, and notes what Instagram shows: Active now, a time, or nothing to show. So the audience rule above is also its limit.

It needs the thread and the setting on both sides, like any reader. When either side turns the setting off, when there is no thread, or when a restriction or block removes the line, the check comes back empty and no tool on this side brings it back. A gap in the timeline means no reading happened there, not that the person was offline. Reading opens the thread, so the other person's messages to you can stop showing as unread. Using iLS reads Instagram in a way its terms forbid, and your Instagram account can face a restriction. Alerts are browser notifications.

For what the line cannot prove — what the person did, who else they talked to, or whether they ignored you — see how to check last seen and what it can really tell you.

FAQ

Can strangers see when I am active on Instagram?

No. Without a follow or a shared DM thread, there is no inbox row that carries your dot or time. Strangers see your public profile, posts and stories as your settings allow, but not your activity line.

Can my followers see my status if we never messaged?

In practice, no line shows. Instagram words the audience as people you follow and anyone you message, but the line lives in the conversation list. Without a thread there is no row to read, so followers with no shared chat see nothing.

Can I hide my status from one person without turning it off for all?

Yes, restrict that account. They stop seeing when you are online, while linked accounts still see you. Turning Show activity status off is the only way to hide from everyone, and then you lose their lines too.

If I restrict someone, can they still see my posts?

Yes. Restrict leaves your profile, posts and stories visible to them. It moves your chat to requests, hides their new comments until approval, and hides your online line and read state from them. Block is the tool that removes the profile and content.

Does turning my status back on bring old times back?

No. The inbox shows current and recent lines only, so old gaps stay gaps there and in any tracker timeline. Others start seeing your dot or times again after your next activity.
