What does the green dot mean on Instagram?

The green dot means Instagram counts the account as active now. Where it appears, what it can't tell you, and how to turn it off.

The green dot means Instagram counts that account as active on Instagram at this moment. It does not show what the person does there, and it does not prove they read your message.

This guide serves both sides of the dot. You see it next to someone's name and wonder what it proves. Or others see it next to yours and you want it gone. It covers where the dot appears, who sees it, how it differs from the other labels, why it misleads, and how to switch it off.

Where do you see the green dot?

You see the dot next to the profile picture of people in Direct messaging. It shows in the inbox list and at the top of an open chat. Instagram introduced it for the Direct inbox and for the friend list you see when you share a post from feed (About Instagram (2018). New Direct Messenger Activity Status.).

Two points follow from that. Instagram describes the dot for messaging surfaces: the inbox, an open chat, and the friend list when sharing. Where the inbox shows a dot for someone active, it shows a timestamp such as Active 25m ago for someone who was active earlier.

Who can see your green dot?

Two conditions decide it, and both must hold. You see the dot only for accounts you follow or have a direct conversation with, and only when both sides keep activity status on. Instagram states the follow-or-message rule in its launch post and repeats the both-on rule on both Help Centre pages (Instagram Help Centre. Turn your Instagram Activity Status on or off. Instagram Help Centre. See who's active on Instagram.).

The rule also runs in reverse. When you turn your own status off, you stop seeing everyone else's dots and timestamps too. There is no middle setting: how to turn on activity status and check the other person's shows where the single switch sits.

How does the dot differ from Active now and the timestamps?

The dot and the words are two renderings of nearby states. The table below maps each one to what it tells you.

What each presence label tells you, and where you see it.

LabelWhere you see itWhat it tells you
Green dotNext to the profile picture in the inboxInstagram counts the account as active now
Active nowUnder the name in an open chatInstagram counts the account as active now
Active 25m ago or another timeIn the inbox, next to the profile pictureAbout when the account was last active
Active today, Active yesterdayIn the inboxThe day of the last activity, with no time
No label—Instagram shows you nothing, which is not the same as offline

For what each timestamp covers, read what each activity label means. One row needs emphasis: no label is not proof of absence. It only means Instagram shows you nothing, for example because one side turned the setting off.

Why is the dot there when nobody touches the phone?

A wrong-looking dot almost always has an ordinary cause, and none of them is documented by Instagram. Treat each cause below as a user report, not as an Instagram statement: the company publishes no explanation of what wakes the dot.

The most reported cause is the app waking in the background. In a long 2026 thread, several people saw the dot while asleep. One person found the phone showing active at 4 a.m. almost every night (r/Instagram (2026). how accurate is instagrams active now status?). A second cause is the same account signed in on another device. The dot describes the account, not one phone. A tablet or a desktop tab left open keeps it lit. A third is plain lag. The inbox shows the last status Instagram recorded. A glance seconds after someone closes the app can still show the old dot.

Instagram gives no duration for that lag and no refresh interval anywhere. Because of that gap, hour tables on other sites are rumours: they cite no Instagram page, and they disagree with each other. For the causes in full, see why Instagram says you are active when you are not.

How do you turn the green dot off?

One switch hides your dot and timestamps from everyone. In the app it sits under the same setting on every device:

  1. Open your profile and tap Menu (the three lines). On desktop, open the Menu in the left sidebar instead.
  2. Below How others can interact with you, tap Messages and story replies.
  3. Tap Show activity status.
  4. Turn the Show activity status toggle off.

The price is reciprocity: with your status off, you cannot see anyone else's dot either. And the switch covers everyone at once — it cannot hide you from one person while staying visible to the rest. That question has its own answer: can you hide your status from just one person.

What the green dot can't tell you

Every honest dot guide needs this section, because the dot invites readings it cannot support. It does not show what the person does on Instagram: scrolling, watching, or chatting all light the same dot. It does not show who they talk to. And it puts no obligation on anyone. A lit dot with no reply usually means the app is open on something else. It does not mean you are ignored.

A timeline helps where memory fails. iLS logs the same line Instagram shows in your messages on its own schedule and keeps it as a presence timeline. You can check hours later instead of watching the inbox. It only works for someone you already share a DM thread with, and only while both of you keep activity status on. Reading the line means opening the conversation, which can mark their messages to you as read. Using it breaks Instagram's terms, and your Instagram account can face a restriction — weigh that before you connect. Alerts are browser notifications, and they are not on iPhone yet. iLS never reads messages, never shows who someone talks to, and never tells whether a message was opened.

FAQ

Does the green dot mean they are chatting with someone?

No. The dot means the account is active on Instagram, not that the person chats. They can scroll, watch, or idle with the app open while the same dot shows.

How long does the green dot stay after someone closes the app?

Instagram does not say. Other sites quote minute counts, but none cites an Instagram page. Read a lingering dot as the last recorded status, not as proof they are still there.

Why is there a green dot when they are clearly not active?

The usual reported causes are a background wake of the app, a second signed-in device, or lag after closing. Check those before you read intent into the dot.

Can I hide the green dot from one person only?

No. The switch is all or nothing, and turning it off also hides everyone else's status from you.
