Why does Instagram say you're active when you're not?

Instagram can show Active now minutes after you close the app. Why the ghost status happens and how to stop it.

By instagram Last Seen7 min read

Instagram shows your most recent recorded status, not a live picture of you holding the phone. That is why it can say Active now minutes after you close the app, or Active 5m ago when you have been offline for an hour.

This guide is for both sides of that confusion: you look active when you are not, or someone else looks active when you know they are not. It explains what Instagram states, the likely causes, and how to stop your own account looking active.

What Instagram says the line shows

Instagram shows presence only in messages: in the chat list next to the profile picture, and at the top when you open the chat. The company introduced it as a green dot in the Direct inbox for friends who follow you or people you talked to in Direct. It ships with a switch to hide your own status (About Instagram (2018). New Direct Messenger Activity Status.).

When the line appears, it uses labels such as Active now, Active 25m ago, Active yesterday, Seen, or Typing. For what each label means, read what each label means.

Two rules decide whether you see anything at all. You see the line only for accounts you follow or message, and only when both sides keep activity status on. If you turn your own status off, you stop seeing everyone else's lines too. Instagram describes this switch under Show activity status in Messages and story replies (Instagram Help Centre. Turn your Instagram Activity Status on or off.).

Just as important is what Instagram leaves out. No Help Centre page states how often the line refreshes, which minute or hour cutoffs move one label to the next, or how accurate it is.

Treat timing tables on other sites as rumours. Instagram publishes no such table.

Why you can look active when you're not

A wrong-looking line almost always has one of the causes below. None of them means someone else holds your phone.

The app woke up in the background

Phones let apps wake briefly to fetch new content, and users report that this wake can flip the line to active for a few minutes (Tech Fixated (2024). Background App Refresh section.). In one long thread, several people saw Active 5m ago after an hour offline, and one person reported that turning off background refresh stopped it — while another noted the opposite problem, missing real activity, after doing the same. Treat this as a reported cause, not an Instagram statement: the company publishes no explanation of background wakes.

The account is open on another device

Active now describes the account, not one phone. A login on a second phone, a tablet, or a work computer keeps the account side active while you are elsewhere. Check where your account is logged in and sign out the sessions you do not use.

A desktop tab is still open

A tab left open on a laptop or work computer can refresh without you touching it. Close the tab instead of only closing the laptop lid, and sign out on shared computers.

You only just closed the app

The inbox shows the last status Instagram recorded, not a live feed. A glance seconds after closing can still show the old dot. This lag is normal, and Instagram gives no duration for it.

One switch covers everyone. It cannot hide you from one person only.

How to stop looking active

Work through these in order. Each step removes one cause.

  1. Close Instagram on the computer. Shut every tab with Instagram open.
  2. Sign out on shared machines.
  3. Check your other logins. Sign out the phones, tablets, and browsers you no longer use.
  4. Update the app. Install the latest Instagram version first, so an old build is not the cause.
  5. Open your profile.
  6. Tap the three-line menu.
  7. Tap Settings and privacy.
  8. Tap Messages and story replies.
  9. Tap Show activity status.
  10. Turn off the switch next to Show activity status if you want no line at all.
  11. Wait, then ask a friend what they see. One check proves little; two checks hours apart show the pattern.

Turning your status off has a price, and both sides need activity status on for any line to show. When yours is off, you see no lines from anyone. If you only want to fix the ghost without going dark, stop after the update step and watch for a day.

What this means when you watch someone else

Apply the same causes in reverse. Their ghost line can come from a background wake, another device, an open tab, or a stale glance — and a single glance cannot tell you which. Instagram gives no interval, so no outside check can date the exact minute they closed the app. For the full accuracy picture, read why the line looks wrong.

Two checks hours apart tell the truth better than ten glances in five minutes. When the line contradicts what you know — asleep next to you, in class, at work — trust what you know.

iLS reads this same line from your own account on its own schedule and keeps each reading on a timeline. It works only for someone you already share a DM thread with, and only while both sides keep activity status on. A gap in the timeline means no valid reading, not proof the person was offline, and opening the thread yourself can mark their messages as read. Reading Instagram this way breaks its terms, and your account can face limits. When the line itself is blank for everyone, start with when the line is blank.

FAQ

Why does Instagram say I was active when I was asleep?

Because the line shows the most recent recorded status, and a background wake, another logged-in device, or an open tab can refresh it overnight. Close extra sessions, update the app, and judge by two checks hours apart instead of one glance.

Does Active now mean the person is chatting with someone?

No. Active now means Instagram last recorded the account active. It does not mean typing, reading your message, or talking to anyone. Typing in an open chat is the only sign of live input.

How long does Instagram keep saying Active now after I close the app?

Instagram publishes no duration. Other sites print minute tables, but no Help page states one, so treat those numbers as rumours and watch the pattern across hours instead.

Will turning off my status hide me from one person only?

No. The Show activity status switch covers everyone at once. When it is off, you hide from all contacts and you see no lines from anyone either.
