How to know if someone restricted you on Instagram
No notification tells you. These are the signs that fit restriction, what else causes them, and the one check that confirms it.

Instagram never tells you when someone restricts you. Three signs fit restriction: your comments show only to you, your messages never show Seen, and their activity status never appears. Each sign has innocent explanations too, so only one check confirms it.
This guide lists the three signs, what else causes each one, and how to rule the alternatives out. It ends with what to do if the signs point to restriction.
What restriction changes for you
When someone restricts you, Instagram limits your side of the contact without any alert. According to Instagram's restrict page, three things change for the restricted account:
- You cannot see when they are online or whether they have read your messages.
- Your comments on their posts stay visible only to you, unless they approve them.
- Your messages reach them as message requests, which they can read without you knowing.
You still see their profile, posts and stories much as before. That is what makes restriction hard to spot: everything looks normal until you look closely. For the other side of the feature, read how Restrict hides activity status from one person.
Sign 1: no one else can see your comments
Leave a comment on their post and it looks normal to you. But nobody else can see it. The account owner sees it on request and can approve it, delete it, or ignore it, and they get no notification about it.
To test this, ask a friend who follows the account to open the post and look for your comment. If your friend cannot find it while you can, your comments are being filtered, and restriction is the most likely reason.
Two caveats apply. On a private account, your friend needs to follow it, or the comparison tells you nothing. And a visible comment does not clear you either, because the owner can approve single comments. Still, a comment that stays hidden from everyone else is the strongest sign there is.
Sign 2: your messages never show Seen
Under your messages to them, the Seen label never appears, not even after days. Their replies, if any come, arrive late or not at all. Since your messages land in their message requests, they can read them without triggering any receipt on your side.
Give it time before you conclude anything. Some people leave messages unread for days. The pattern matters more than one message: previously quick replies that turn into permanent silence, while they keep posting, fits restriction.
One alternative explains the same pattern. They may simply rarely open the chat. Unlike a missing activity status, an unread message has no setting to check, so weigh this sign together with the other two instead of alone.
Sign 3: their activity status never appears
You used to see Active now or Active 25m ago under your chat with them, and now you see nothing, week after week. Since restriction hides their status from you, a permanently blank line fits.
First check your own side. Instagram shows a status only when both accounts have Show activity status switched on. If you turned yours off, you hide everyone's status from yourself, restriction or not. Turn yours on and look again over a few days.
The common alternative is that they switched their own status off, which looks identical. If a mutual contact still sees their status while you do not, that difference points toward restriction. Read other reasons activity status disappears before you decide.
Is it restriction, a block, a mute, or something else?
Single signs overlap, so compare the full picture. Instagram documents each tool in its restrict, mute and block guide.
What each limit looks like from your side.
| If they… | Their profile and posts | Your comments | Your messages | Their activity status | Any notification to you |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restricted you | Visible | Only you see them | Go to requests, never Seen | Never shows | None |
| Blocked you | Gone from search | Removed | Cannot send | Never shows | None |
| Muted you | Visible | Normal | Normal | Normal | None |
| Turned status off | Visible | Normal | Normal | Never shows | None |
| Deactivated | Shows as Instagram User | Normal | Cannot send | Never shows | None |
A block is easy to separate: you lose the profile itself. A mute leaves no sign on your side by design and changes nothing for you, so it never explains missing comments or missing receipts. If their account shows as Instagram User in your chat, read what Instagram User in DMs means instead, because that points to a block, a deactivation or a deletion.
What to do if the signs point to restriction
No self-serve check gives certainty. The comment comparison comes closest; everything else is a clue. Only the other person can confirm it, for example by opening their Restricted list in settings and looking for your name. If the contact matters to you, ask them directly rather than probing with new accounts.
Respect what you find. Restriction is how someone sets a boundary without a confrontation. Give the contact space instead of finding ways around the limit.
If you track this person with iLS, restriction reads the same as any other unreadable state: no status to read, so the timeline shows No signal instead of readings. Work through fixing empty iLS readings to rule out the ordinary causes first. Note that using iLS breaks Instagram's terms and can get your account restricted, so weigh that before you reconnect.
FAQ
Will Instagram tell me if someone restricts me?
No. Instagram sends no notification for restriction, and it sends none for blocks either. You can only go by the signs above.
Can I still see their posts and stories if I am restricted?
In most cases yes. Restriction filters your comments and your messages, and hides their status from you. It does not remove your access to their profile, posts or stories.
If I restrict someone, can they tell?
They get no notification. They may still notice the same signs this guide describes, especially hidden comments, so restriction stays discreet but its effects can still show.
Does restriction hide my activity status from everyone?
No. It hides your status only from the accounts you restrict. Everyone else who could see it still can.
