Instagram verification code not received? What to check for SMS, WhatsApp and email
No Instagram code by SMS, WhatsApp or email? What to check for each method, how backup codes help, and when to try the iLS connect step again.

If your Instagram verification code never arrives, first name which inbox you wait for. An SMS code is 6-digit and goes to the confirmed phone on the account. A WhatsApp code goes to WhatsApp on that number. An authenticator app shows its own code, and nothing is sent. An email code or link goes to the account email. A saved backup code still works when delivery fails.
This guide is for the code screen that blocks login: a new phone, 2FA turned on, or a changed number. It covers each method in turn, how backup codes and another device help, and what to do when the code step appears in iLS.
Which code are you waiting for?
Instagram uses four different codes, and each has its own inbox. Check the screen title and pick your row before you change anything. According to Instagram's SMS security code guide, an SMS code is 6-digit and arrives on each login from a device it does not recognise. It needs a confirmed phone number on the account.
Where each Instagram code arrives, and the first check for each.
| Method | Where it arrives | First check |
|---|---|---|
| SMS | 6-digit code to the confirmed phone number | Is this number still on your phone now? |
| Message to WhatsApp on that number, chosen on the same 2FA screen | Did you choose SMS or WhatsApp as the method? | |
| Authenticator app | No message is sent; the app shows the code itself | Open Duo Mobile or Google Authenticator and read the current code |
| Password-reset email, login link or security code to the account email | Check spam and confirm the address on the account |
If you turned on two-factor authentication, Instagram asks you to choose SMS codes or an authenticator app as the primary method. The choice sits under Accounts Centre, then Password and security, then Two-factor authentication. If the app is the primary method, no SMS arrives.
SMS or WhatsApp code not coming?
Work through these checks in order. They come from Instagram's SMS help page and from a reviewed 2026 fix guide that cites it.
- Check signal and airplane mode. Without a mobile signal, no SMS arrives. Turn airplane mode off, then switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data once.
- Confirm the number on the account. If you changed phones without updating Instagram, the code goes to the old number. You must be logged in to change it, so borrow a logged-in device if you can.
- Check the authenticator app first. When 2FA uses an app, Instagram sends no SMS. Open the app and use the current code.
- Unblock the Instagram sender. On some phones the short code, for example 32665 in the US, sits in blocked numbers. Remove it from blocked contacts, then request a new code.
- Turn mobile data on and keep the connection stable. An unstable link can block delivery even when Wi-Fi looks fine.
- Turn the VPN or proxy off. Instagram can flag some IP addresses, which can stop codes. Use mobile data or another Wi-Fi network with the VPN off.
- Request email instead of SMS where the screen offers it. The code then goes to the account email, which helps when the phone line is the problem.
- Check whether Instagram itself has problems. Sites like DownDetector show user reports; if reports spike, wait and try the same screen later.
Do not request a new code each minute. Repeated requests can trigger a limit that locks the screen for a while. If you see Please wait a few minutes, follow that screen and try again later.
Email code or link not coming?
Email codes fail for different reasons from SMS codes. According to Instagram's password-reset email guide, a missing password-reset email is often in spam, or the address on the account is not the one you check.
Check spam first. Then confirm the address on the account is yours and spelled right. If you mistyped the email when you signed up, Instagram says it cannot give you access to that account.
If your Instagram and Facebook accounts are linked, you can reset through Facebook verification. Ask your email provider to allow mail from the @instagram.com domain. If you lost access to the address, use the lost-access steps on the login screen instead of requesting more links to an inbox you cannot open.
If you think someone else tried your account, open instagram.com/hacked on a desktop or mobile browser and secure the account there.
Use a backup code or another device instead
If SMS and email both fail, a backup code still completes login. According to Instagram's backup code guide, when a 2FA code cannot be sent because of connectivity or delivery problems, you can still finish with a backup code.
Get the list before you need it: press More in the bottom left, then Settings. Press Accounts Centre, then Password and security. Press Two-factor authentication, then the account, then Additional methods. Press Backup codes. Save the list somewhere only you can open.
If you are already logged in on another phone or computer, approve the login there. Instagram can confirm you from a recognised device without a code. The Confirm it's you screen uses the same idea: a code to the email or phone proves ownership when activity looks unusual.
What to do when iLS asks for the code
iLS signs in as you from a new place, so Instagram often asks for a code during connect. For the full form, see how to connect your Instagram account. The code step works like this.
- Find the code Instagram sent to your email or phone.
- Type it into Verification code.
- Press Verify and continue.
Keep the page open. The code has a time limit. If it expires, press Connect account again and use the new code Instagram sends. Your Instagram password goes once to the browser that signs you in and is never stored; iLS keeps only the logged-in session, encrypted.
iLS reads only the activity status Instagram shows in a DM thread you already share, and only while both sides keep activity status on. Reading opens the thread, which can mark the other person's messages as read. Using iLS breaks Instagram's Terms of Use, and Instagram can restrict an account that signs in this way.
What it cannot tell you
No article can invent a code for you, and no setting bypasses two-factor authentication. If the number and email on the account are both out of reach, and no backup codes were saved, the remaining path is Instagram's recovery on the login screen, not another request to the same inbox.
A code also cannot prove why delivery failed. It shows only that Instagram sent to the inbox on file. When the inbox itself is wrong, fix the inbox first.
FAQ
Why am I not receiving the 6-digit code from Instagram?
You wait in the wrong inbox in most cases. SMS codes go to the confirmed phone, WhatsApp to that number in WhatsApp, authenticator codes appear only in the app, and email codes go to the account email. Pick your row in the first table, then run its checks.
How long should I wait before I request another code?
Wait a few minutes and keep the same screen open. Each new request can replace the last code and can trigger a temporary limit. If a wait screen appears, follow it instead of requesting again.
Can I get the code by email instead of SMS?
Yes, where the screen offers it. Choose the email option and check spam and the exact address on the account. Email helps when the phone line, signal or blocked sender is the problem.
What if I changed my number or lost access to my email?
Use a saved backup code or approve from a device that stays logged in. If neither exists, follow the login screen path for lost access and give an address only you can open. A mistyped signup email cannot be fixed by requesting more codes to it.
