Please wait a few minutes before you try again: why Instagram stops your login and what to do
Instagram's "Please wait a few minutes before you try again" message stops your login. Why it appears, how long people wait, and what to do meanwhile.

"Please wait a few minutes before you try again" is a message on Instagram's login screen. It means that Instagram turned your login attempt away for now and wants you to wait. It isn't the wrong-password message, and on its own it doesn't mean that Instagram disabled your account.
Instagram doesn't explain this message in its Help Center, and it gives no time limit. This guide separates what Instagram says from what people report. It shows what to do while you wait, why a VPN is a poor fix, and how apps that log in to your account, iLS included, can play a part.
What does "Please wait a few minutes before you try again" mean?
The message appears when you try to log in, in the app or on instagram.com, and you stay on the login screen. People describe it in a Reddit thread from 2022. A thread on Meta's forum for developers shows a similar line, "Please wait a few minutes before trying again.", on the Instagram login page that business apps use.
Instagram's Help Center has no page about this message. Its list of common error messages covers follow limits, disabled accounts and comment errors, but not this one (checked in October 2026).
The message is easy to confuse with other login screens:
Instagram login messages that look alike, and what each one tells you.
| What you see | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| "Please wait a few minutes before you try again" | Instagram turned this login attempt away for now |
| A message that your account is disabled | Instagram disabled the account, and it shows this message when you try to log in |
| A message that your password is incorrect | The password that you typed is wrong |
| A request for a code, or to confirm it's you | Instagram wants to check that the login is yours |
The code that logs iLS users in to Instagram meets this message too. It treats the message as Instagram limiting repeated logins, not as a wrong password.
How long does the block last?
Instagram doesn't say. The message itself says "a few minutes", and no Instagram page gives a longer time or a limit.
People report longer waits. In the Reddit thread, the person who asked could not log in for 2 days. Others in the thread logged in again after about 24 hours, or on the third day. Some guides give fixed times, such as 48 hours, but they cite no source for them.
So the wait can be much longer than the words suggest, and nobody can promise a time. If the message stays, use the recovery steps below rather than more attempts.
What should you do while you wait?
- Stop trying to log in. The message asks you to wait, and each new try is one more login attempt.
- If you are still logged in on another phone, tablet or computer, use that device.
- On that device, open your profile and tap the menu. Tap Password and security, then Where you're logged in.
- Check that you recognize every login, as Instagram's login activity page describes.
- When you try again, try once on your other connection. Use mobile data if you were on Wi-Fi, or the reverse.
- Update the Instagram app, or try instagram.com in a browser.
- If you aren't sure of your password, don't guess. Tap Forgot password? on the login screen and use the link that Instagram sends.
- If the message doesn't go away, use Instagram's I can't log in page. It collects the recovery options in one place.
Steps 5 and 6 follow Instagram's general advice for app problems. Its troubleshooting page tells you to try both Wi-Fi and mobile data, and Instagram says that you can always use instagram.com in a browser. Developers on Meta's forum also reported that a hotspot or another connection helped. Step 7 follows Instagram's password recovery page: a reset link is safer than more guesses.
Some advice in other guides is better to skip:
- A VPN. Many guides suggest one. A VPN makes your login come from a different place, while the message asks you to slow down. iLS also asks people to turn off a VPN before they connect, so that the login matches their normal Instagram activity.
- Giving your password to someone who offers to fix the login. Instagram warns that an app with your login details can get complete access to your account.
- Deleting the app again and again. Reinstalling is one of Instagram's general troubleshooting steps. No Instagram page says that it ends this message.
Why does Instagram show it?
Instagram doesn't explain this message, so nobody outside Instagram can confirm the cause. Instagram's other pages and user reports point to three possible reasons.
Possible reasons for the message, with the evidence for each.
| Possible reason | Evidence | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Many login attempts in a short time | The words of the message, and iLS's login code meets it after repeated automated logins | Stop, and wait |
| An app that logs in with your password, or other automated access | Instagram's data scraping page lists both as reasons why its systems can flag an account | Stop the app, and change your password |
| The network that you log in from | Developers on Meta's forum reported that another connection fixed it | Try your other connection once |
Instagram doesn't link any of these reasons to this message in its Help Center. Treat the table as a list of things to check, not as a diagnosis.
Can a last seen app like iLS cause it?
It can, at least when iLS itself logs in. The code that logs iLS users in to Instagram meets this message, as the first section explains. Instagram's data scraping page also names a password given to a third-party app as one reason why its systems flag an account. Its page about apps that offer likes and followers says that accounts which keep using them may find parts of their account limited. Instagram doesn't say whether an app's logins can also block the login on your own phone.
This is how iLS logs in:
- iLS logs in to Instagram only when you press Connect account or Reconnect account. Scheduled checks reuse the saved session and don't log in again.
- If Instagram shows this message to the iLS login, iLS stops. It doesn't try again by itself.
- iLS never stores your Instagram password. It keeps the logged-in session, encrypted, and Disconnect deletes it.
If you see the message after you connect iLS or another app, wait before you log in anywhere again. Then connect once, with any VPN turned off. Using iLS breaks Instagram's Terms of Use, which don't allow automated access without Instagram's permission, and Instagram can restrict an account that uses it. Read how to lower the risk of using iLS and how connecting iLS works before you try again.
An app that logs in with your username and password may not appear in Apps and websites. That list covers the apps and websites that you log into with Instagram or connect to your account. To see every place where your account is logged in, check Where you're logged in. To end all the other sessions, change your password: Instagram logs you out of all other devices when you do.
What can't the message tell you?
- How long you must wait. Instagram gives no time.
- Why Instagram turned the attempt away. The message names no reason.
- Whether someone else tried to log in. Check Where you're logged in when you can log in again.
- Whether your account has other limits. After you log in, open your profile menu and tap Account Status to see features that you can no longer use.
FAQ
Does "Please wait a few minutes" mean my Instagram account is banned?
Not on its own. Instagram says that a disabled account sees a message about it when it tries to log in, and "Please wait a few minutes" is a different message. After you log in again, open Account Status to check for limits on your account.
Will deleting and reinstalling Instagram fix it?
It may not. Reinstalling is one of Instagram's general troubleshooting steps, but no Instagram page links it to this message. In the Reddit thread, one person logged in after reinstalling three times, and another person had no result.
Could someone else be trying to log in to my account?
It's possible, but the message doesn't say. If you didn't try to log in many times yourself, go to instagram.com/hacked to secure the account. When you can log in again, check Where you're logged in and log out of any device that you don't recognize.
